Iranian, Norwegian diplomats discuss latest developments in Iraq, Syria

Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi held a meeting with visiting Special Envoy of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Iraq and Syria Hilde Haraldstad.

During the meeting, the diplomats discussed the most recent developments in Syria and Iraq as well as ways to counter elements creating instability in the region, especially Takfiri terrorist groups.

Stressing Iran’s readiness to continue bilateral cooperation with Norway about regional and international issues, Araghchi said, “Security and stability in its vicinity are of great importance to Iran and Tehran spares no effort on this issue”.

“Iran helped Iraq and Syria in fighting the ISIS terrorist group at the invitation of the two countries' governments,” he added.

Pointing to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as the greatest achievement of diplomacy in the troubled region of West Asia, Araghchi stressed, “If the US is serious about returning to the JCPOA, the path is simple; it should return to the deal it has withdrawn from and put an end to all the sanctions”.

Haraldstad, for her part, detailed the humanitarian measures of Norway to the region and stressed her country's interest in continuing political consultations about regional affairs.
