Iranian documentary “Coup 53” at Oscars’ Best Picture race

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian documentary “Coup 53” directed by Taghi Amirani was introduced as one of the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to hold April 25.

This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever.

Academy voting will run March 5-10, with nominations to be announced March 15.

“Coup 53” depicts the 1953 Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état.

In August 1953, the British intelligence agency and its American counterpart, the CIA, initiated the coup by the Iranian military, setting off a series of events, including riots on the streets of the capital Tehran, which led to the overthrow and arrest of Iran’s first democratically-elected government of Mohammad Mosaddeq.
