Future of Iran-US relations not simple: Khatibzadeh

Tehran (ISNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh stressed that the future of Iran-US relations is not simple because of Americans' crimes against the Iranian nation during the past 40 years from backing the Regime of Saddam in Imposed War to economic sanctions and assassinating General Soleimani.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Sunday, Khatibzadeh referred to the prospects of the relations of Iran and the United States and said, “Iran will never forget the list of US crimes against the Iranian nation, and in this regard, Iran’s demands from the United States will never change”.

“Iran’s foreign policy is a matter of sovereignty and the policy is formulated and announced based on the national interests of the country,” he added.

Answering a question over Iran’s reaction to the possible return of US to the table of JCPOA following Biden's residence at the White House, Khatibzadeh said, “We carefully and vigilantly follow all developments and statements, however until a government is established in the United States, we cannot comment on such issues”.

What matters to the Islamic Republic is Americans’ behavior, not their statements and claims, he stressed.

“Today, everyone has realized the fact that the policy of maximum pressure had led to a ‘maximum defeat’ for the United States, and that anyone in the White House had no choice but to respect the rights of the Iranian people” he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Khatibzadeh spoke about the summoning of the Italian envoy to Foreign Ministry on November 17 and stated, “Canada has adopted political measures against Iran in gross violation of human rights and at the same time supports the US Economic Terrorism and anti-Revolution movements, so that the Foreign Ministry has summoned Italian ambassador to Tehran as interest section of Canada to protest Ottawa government's unlawful acts”.

“We urge Canadian government to comply with its commitments to human rights and stop double standards in its behavior and actions. I believe that there are different areas that the two countries can have appropriate cooperation however, the Canadian government's approach has been destructive over the last few years,” he added.

The spokesman also criticized Saudi Arabia’s support for designating the Yemeni Ansarullah movement in the US Department of State’s list for terrorist groups.

“This is not surprising. For several years, Saudi Arabia has been killing the innocent people of Yemen through cluster bombs, putting them in an all-out famine”, he said.

“The only solution to Yemeni crisis is to recognize intra-Yemeni talks and letting international processes to lead the crisis to correct path and Iran proudly stands by the Yemeni people,” Khatibzadeh emphasized.
