Arms embargo on Iran to be lifted on October 18 based on JCPOA: Khatibzadeh

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh stressed that on October 18, the arms embargo on Iran will be lifted based on Iran Nuclear Deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Khatibzadeh said, “Five years after JCPOA's approval, this will happen, and this year is the fifth anniversary of the agreement. America's historic defeat will happen. Despite all the US’ tricks and extrajudicial actions, this country could not move forward and once again showed that it is not as powerful as it claims”.

About Europe's performance in the face of US sanctions against Iran, Khatibzadeh said, "We do not expect anyone to be kind to the Iranian people. We expect everyone to fulfill their obligations. Unfortunately, Europe spent all its credibility in the JCPOA to the satisfaction of the United States. We have told them many times that the strategy is wrong. Europe and some other parties have failed to live up to their commitments".

"Whoever issues an order against the Iranian people in Washington and whoever carries out that order is a partner in the crime against the Iranian nation," the diplomat added.

He stated, "US sanctions on food and medicine in Iran are very severe, but victory is near, and the US' breath is numbered regarding the sanctions. The United States has awakened the world by frantically using the dollar and other currencies and sanctions, and various mechanisms have been formed, and these are the first steps. Today, the US is the greatest enemy of Iranians".

The spokesman also referred to Zarif and his British counterpart phone conversation and British debt to Iran and stated, "Britain has a definite debt to the Islamic Republic of Iran and every day that the repayment is postponed, the amount increases".

"Britain has to pay the debt and it has nothing to do with other issues including prisoners," Khatibzadeh said.

Regarding Nazanin Zaghari's case, the spokesman also explained, "Zaghari has a court order and our judiciary is completely independent, and she is serving her sentence term based on the court's conviction".

Commenting on Astana peace talks on Syria, Khatibzadeh said foreign ministries of three countries are in touch and the troika contact group is trying to follow up the peace talks by the end of October focusing on Eastern Euphrates, Idlib and Syria Constitution.

He also pointed to Iran’s plan to help resolve Karabakh crisis, saying, “We welcome ceasefire in Karabakh but we regret violation of ceasefire by both sides. Iran condemns bombarding residential areas and infrastructures and killing civilians”.

“We invite both sides to exercise self-restraint and believe that political talks, respecting territorial integrity and withdrawal from occupied areas will help establish sustainable peace,” Khatibzadeh added.

Referring to the Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's visit to China and the roadmap for the 25-year cooperation between the two countries, the spokesman said, "The document of the strategic partnership between Iran and China is more of a roadmap between the two countries, which has been discussed between them for several years. It was discussed on this visit, and the technical aspects are underway among the experts. There is a serious consensus between Iran and China on this issue, and it is valuable that the relationship being raised to a level of strategic partnership".
