Iran condoles with families of Ukrainian plane crash victims

Tehran (ISNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi on Wednesday expressed condolence and regret over the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines plane near Tehran.

Expressing deep regret on the crash, the spokesman condoled with Iranian nation, Ukrainian government and people, as well as the families of those died in the incident.

A Ukrainian passenger plane carrying 176 passengers and crew has crashed a few minutes after taking off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport due to engine failure.

The Boeing 737-800 operated by Ukrainian International Airlines took off from Imam Khomeini international airport at 6.12am Tehran time and went down about six minutes later.

Spokesman for Imam Khomeini International Airport, Ali Kashani said that the plane bound for Kiev and carrying 167 passengers and 9 crew crashed around Parand, about 60 kilometres south-west of Tehran.

All 144 Iranians and 32 foreigners on board died in the incident.

Ukraine's embassy in Iran said on Wednesday morning that engine failure caused the plane to crash and denied that it was terror-related.
