Zarif: “End of US malign presence in West Asia has begun”

Tehran (ISNA) – Stressing that targeting cultural sites is a war crime, Iranian Foreign Minister said on Sunday, “End of US malign presence in West Asia has begun”.

“Having committed grave breaches of international law in Friday's cowardly assassinations, US President Donald Trump threatens to commit again new breaches of JUS COGENS,” Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on his official Twitter account.

“Targeting cultural sites is a WAR CRIME. Whether kicking or screaming, end of US malign presence in West Asia has begun,” he added.

“Those masquerading as diplomats and those who shamelessly sat to identify Iranian cultural and civilian targets should not even bother to open a law dictionary. Jus cogens refers to peremptory norms of international law, i.e. international red lines. That is, a big(ly) "no no",” he also said in another tweet.

Zarif pointed to Trump’s recent tweet during which the US President threatened that 52 high level Iranian targets (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago) will be hit very fast if Iran strikes Americans or American assets in retaliation for the assassination of IRGC commander General Qassem Soleimani on Friday.

Trump's panic appears to be a response to Iranian officials who had vowed severe retaliation against the U.S. for the assassination of General Soleimani.
