13th Cinema Verite to host 5 continents

Tehran (ISNA) - Documentaries from 39 countries including Germany and France are slated to be screened at 13thedition of the Iran Documentary film festival known as Cinema Vérité.

According to the festival organizers, among 55 films sent by 39 countries to the secretariat of this edition, German documentarians hold the record with 8 films and France stands 2nd with 7 documentaries ready to compete in the world competition section.

The US and Italy will compete with 6 films, Netherlands, Qatar, Norway and Lithuania with 3 films, the UK, Russia, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Egypt, Serbia, Afghanistan, Austria  and Hungary with 2 documentaries are scheduled to capture the audience in this edition. Other countries like Belgium, Argentina, Ireland, Japan, Switzerland, Sudan, Sweden, Ukraine and Somalia each will rival with one film.

Iran's documentary cinema has gained worldwide recognition during the last years, which could be considered as one major factor for this wide range of participation from different countries.  

The Cinema Verite could be called a cradle to Iran documentary world as it annually provides the chance for documentarians to showcase their films and get familiar with other directors from across the globe.

Cinema Verite is an international reunion event held every year in November in Tehran among the international well-known documentarians from all over the world aiming to pave the ground for them to introduce their works and watch the films from other lands. The international event has been home to many countries during the last 12 editions namely Argentina, Germany, France, Austria, Spain, Australia, Japan, Russia, etc.

The 13th edition of the festival has just announced its sections including the competition section with Full-length documentaries (+70), Mid-length documentaries (40-70), and Short-length documentaries (-40) and out-of-Competition section with Mirror of a Festival: Millenium International Documentary Film Festival, Portrait, Special Screenings and Retrospective on Balkan & Baltic Countries.

Mirror of Festival section highlights documentaries with the issues and challenges of the 21st century human being faces and documentarians from different countries have already sent their films to the festival secretariat willing to participate in this part. "Mirror of Festival" aims to support the independent documentarians putting their all-out efforts into drawing special attention to high-quality film on the issues of the day.

Seven documentaries from Millennium Festival in Belgium are selected to be screened at the 13th Cinéma Vérité in the Mirror of a Festival section which will held with presence of Zlatina Rousseva, the artistic director of the Millennium Festival.

The major purpose of the section is to inspire the audiences to ponder about the relation between the films and mesmerizing portrayal of the world around them. Millenium section annually holds two national and international pitching panels aiming to support the young talented documentary filmmakers.

The 13th edition of Cinema Verite will kick off officially on December 9-16 in Tehran.

According to the festival secretariat, among 687 films from Iranian documentarians, directors from more than 100 countries across the world have sent approximately 6000 works to the world competition section of the international event. Some documentaries awarded from the international festivals including Locarno, International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, Karlovy Vary, and Visions du Réel, are to be showcased in the 13th Iran International Documentary Film Festival too. 

This edition is also due to hold various workshops in presence of prominent international features aiming to widen the horizons of young directors towards making effective documentaries. Those interested to attend the workshops could refer to www.irandocfest.ir to register and get informed about the requirements. Expansion of the international research and mutual relations as well as creating significant chance for the youth to get familiar with remarkable documentarians are major objectives behind these workshops.

Mohammad Hamidi Moghadam has been announced to be the festival director in this edition. The judges of the event have started their job a while ago and the finalized list will be announced by early November.
