Iran, Iraq to cooperate in air defense area

Tehran (ISNA) – “We may feel some air threats along western borders which was discussed in a meeting with Iraq’s army chief of staff and we planned to have bilateral cooperation in air defence area to reach a better coordination,” Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri said.

On the sidelines of a meeting with Iraqi Chief of Staff General Othman al-Ghanimi, General Bagheri told reporters, “Iran-Iraq relation is different from relations with other countries and we have common threats and interests”.

“Forces of the two countries should improve their cooperation towards mutual purposes,” the Iranian general stressed.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces added, “We also reached good understandings over cooperation in military training, joint drills and transmission of Iran’s military experience to Iraq. The discussed cooperation will be finalized in the near future”.

Regarding US troops’ presence in Iraq, General Bagheri said, “The issue of US forces’ presence in Iraq has also been discussed in the meeting. The Iraqi side assured us that it will carry out more control measures and the presence of the troops is only for training and they are under control of Iraq’s army”.
