Iran condemns Bahrain upholding of Ali Salman’s life sentence

نشست بهرام قاسمی سخنگوی وزارت امور خارجه

Tehran (ISNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned the upholding of life sentences for moderate opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman and two other moderate opposition figures in a Bahraini appeal court.

“The deliverance of this unjust sentence against him on empty charges shows that the Bahraini government, relaying on the support of several foreign countries, is working to silence the voice of peaceful protests in the country,” Bahram Qassemi said.

Criticizing the silence of the international community on inhumane moves of the Bahraini government and pointing the US’ insincere positions, Qassemi said, “The US has shown green light for crack down on opposition by selling weapons and lending full political support”.

The spokesman urged the Bahraini officials to stop being fully dependent to foreign support, entering failed coalitions and buying security from abroad, and asked them to put aside police and security approaches and end suppressive moves such as delivering unfair sentences against opposition.

Qassemi advised the Bahraini government to engage in real and serious dialogue with opposition forces and respond to legitimate popular demands.
