In an interview with al-Mayadeen;

Iran will not keep waiting unless Europeans take practical steps: FM Zarif

محمد جواد ظریف

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed that Iran has many options following US’ withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, noting the EU is slow on fulfilling their commitments under the deal and Iran will not keep waiting unless they take practical steps.

“US presence in Syria was illegitimate from the beginning as it wasn’t approved by the official Syrian government, and it is too early to render conclusions about the outcome of their presence,” Mr. Zarif said in an interview with Lebanon-based Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network.

“They created tensions in the country and contrary to their claim they in no way fought with Daesh,” he added.

Zarif also commented on Turkey’s decision to launch operations in Syria against the YPG and PKK in the eastern Euphrates, noting that Ankara should coordinate military operations with the Syrian government.

“We have always said that such operations should be undertaken by the Damascus government. We understand Turkey’s concerns over terrorist acts, but military operations without Damascus approval cannot contribute to solving crisis. We are ready to help them to address their concerns through coordination with the Syrian government,” he said.

About US’ withdrawal from the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the top Iranian diplomat emphasized that the Tehran has many options to deal with the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and would consider them based on its national interests.

Zarif also expressed regret over EU’s interaction on implementing the JCPOA, noting that the Europeans are acting slowly in the fulfillment of their commitments under the JCPOA and Iran will not keep waiting unless they take practical steps.
