Iran kicks off joint air defense drill “Velayat 97”

Tehran (ISNA) – The joint air defense drill codenamed “Velayat 97” kicked off on Monday in vast regions in north central and western Iran, covering 500,000 square kilometres.

The two-day air drill is being jointly conducted by forces from Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base, Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and squadrons from Army’s Air Force.

The maneuver includes employing command and control systems to detect, track, intercept and destroy hostile targets, conducting air defense operations in electronic warfare, using passive aerial detection systems as well as air-based air defense gear including manned and unmanned aircraft, and countering anti-radiation and cruise missiles.
