Iran’s Zarif arrives in Pakistan to pursue fate of abducted guards

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed that he has traveled to Pakistan to pursue the fate of Iranian border guards abducted and taken to the Pakistani territory.

Mr. Zarif arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday at the head of a political and military delegation.

Speaking to the media upon his arrival in the Pakistani capital, Iranian top diplomat said, “Iran and Pakistan are great neighbors but unfortunately, a number of Iranian border guards abducted and taken to the Pakistani territory weeks ago and because of that it is necessary to hold constant talks with Pakistani officials to witness the safe return of the border guards”.

“That is why Iranian authorities are in constant touch with their Pakistani counterparts and I have traveled to Pakistan to further intensify efforts for the safe recovery of Iranian border guards,” he added

Answering a question, Mr. Zarif said Pakistani officials have promised Iranian authorities to do their best effort to secure the freedom of 12 Iranian border guards abducted by terrorist groups.

The bilateral relations and the most important regional and international developments would also be discussed during the visit.

FM Zarif is to hold meetings with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. He is also expected to hold meeting Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
