Turkey says working with France against U.S. steps on Iran, trade

Tehran (ISNA) - Turkey will work together with France in the face of U.S. pressure to implement sanctions on Iran and in other trade disputes with Washington, Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said.

France has backed the global and Middle Eastern economy, as well as opposing U.S. steps against Turkey in light of their historic friendship, Albayrak, the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said in a joint press conference in Paris with Bruno Le Maire, France’s economy minister, according to state-run TRT television.

President Donald Trump has called on all nations and commercial enterprises to abide by sanctions on Iran or face punitive measures. Trump has also levied sanctions on two Turkish ministers and doubled import duties on the country’s steel in a dispute over Turkey’s detention of a U.S. pastor and other Americans.

The Trump administration is isolating itself from its global allies and hurting the reputation of the dollar as a global trading currency, Albayrak said. As a result, countries are beginning to consider trade in common currencies other than the dollar, such as Turkey’s trade with the European Union which is conducted in euros, he said.
