Tehran (ISNA) – Iran has won both men’s and women’s kabaddi championships at 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

Iranian women's team defeated India 27-24 on August 24 and won the gold medal, one day after the Iranian men’s team stunned India by defeating the seven-time champion in the semifinals.

Iranian women’s victory marks the first time a women's team has beaten India in kabaddi at the Asian Games.

Late on the same day, the Iranian men’s team put an even more convincing end to India's dominance in the sport by clinching a gold medal with a lopsided 26-16 victory over South Korea in the final game of the event.

Kabaddi is a sport that combines aspects of tag and tackle with wrestling moves.

It has long been dominated by India.

Indian kabaddi would return from Jakarta without a gold for the first time since the sport was introduced at the Asian Games in 1990.

India had won both the previous editions since women’s kabaddi was included in Asian Games in 2010.

At the 18th Asian Games, which started on August 8 and continues until September 2, Iran has so far won 31 medals, including 12 gold, 11 silver and eight Bronze medals.
