Iranian wrestlers win 3 colorful medals on 1st day

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian freestyle wrestlers won 2 gold and 1 bronze medals on the 1st official day of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

In the freestyle wrestling 86 kg category, Hassan Yazdani defeated all his opponents by technical superiority, taking Iran’s first gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday.

Yazdani beat wrestlers from Indonesia, India and Mongolia to reach the final match. In the final, the Iranian athlete overpowered his Lebanese opponent 10-0 to wrap up the victory in just 1 minute and 29 seconds.

In the 97kg category, Alireza Karimi also won a gold medal with a 6-0 victory over his opponent from Kyrgyzstan. Karimi defeated wrestlers from Japan and Uzbekistan in the earlier rounds.

In the 57kg category, Reza Atri also claimed a bronze medal.

The 2018 Asian Games is a pan-Asian multi-sport event scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

The athletes compete in 465 events across 40 sports and 67 disciplines.

These are the 18th edition of the quadrennial event.
