Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi announced that a Russian national called Rajab Safarov has never been a member of Russian negotiation team on the Caspian Sea, dismissing his claims as baseless and invalid.

BBC Persian recently published an interview with Safarov, introducing him as a member of Russia’s team of experts in the Kazakhstan talks on the Caspian Sea.

During the interview, Safarov claimed that Iran had easily gave up its 50% share of the Caspian Sea after dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1996, expressing surprise that Iran has not insisted on its 50% share of the Caspian Sea from the outset of the negotiations.

In a reaction to the claims, Qassemi said, “Records show that Safarov has never been a member of Russia’s negotiation team with Iranian delegation on the Caspian Sea issue.”

“Without doubt the claims and remarks made by the Russian individual void of any credibility and making such baseless claims at the period has certain purposes that are masterminded by certain elements and centers,” he added.
