Tehran (ISNA) – Member of Tehran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Kaveh Zargaran said, Iran’s saffron exports has maintained its increase during last year for the second consecutive year and has broken the record of saffron exports in the past 10 years.

Zargaran declared that the amount of saffron exported last year was about 236 tons worth $326 million. “Despite the 55% of growth in its export, about 77% of Iran’s saffron is exported only to three countries including Hong Kong, UAE and Spain which shows our weak function in acquiring more shares in other markets”.

The member of Tehran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture mentioned, “The figures of Iran’s saffron major importer countries indicate that, however countries such as Spain are major importers of this product, they are also among greatest exporters of saffron in the world”.

“The lack of considering the global market needs and attempts to comply with it during previous terms has led Iran to leave the packaged saffron market to countries such as Spain and despite being the greatest producer and exporter of saffron, Iran exports the major amount of its saffron in bulk which brings less value added to the country,” Zargaran said.

Zargaran further criticized the relevant officials for their neglect in protecting the saffron corms from being smuggled from the country, saying, "Their neglect has let Afghanistan to be one of our competitors in production and export of saffron. The country exported over $17 million in 2017 and has increased its share of saffron global market by 23%".
