Iran pledges to continue cooperation with Russia until total elimination of terrorists: Defense Minister

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami, who is in Russia attend the seventh Moscow Conference on Global Security, held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu.

During the meeting, General Hatami mentioned Iran’s active participation in all seven security conferences organized by Moscow, adding “Military cooperation between Iran and Russia has been progressing well under an agreement signed in 2015”.

“Iran will keep up its counter-terrorism cooperation with Russia until the total elimination of terrorism in Syria. The cooperation between the two countries was based on an oath to continue fighting terrorism to the end and we will remain faithful to our oath with Russia in this regard,” he said.

During the meeting they also discussed bilateral defense ties as well as regional and international cooperation.

Sergey Shoygu, for his part, hailed Iran and Russia’s joint efforts in liberating a major part of Syria from terrorists’ control.

“Moscow and Tehran now need to focus on boosting regional security, restoring stability to Syria and helping refugees return home” he said.

“During the Moscow security conference, we will exchange views on topics that will be discussed during the Iran-Russia-Turkey summit in Ankara,” Russian Defense Minister added.

The three-way summit on Syrian developments is scheduled for April 4 in the Turkish capital, to be attended by President Rouhani, President Putin and President Erdogan.

The seventh Moscow Conference on Global Security will also be held on Wednesday, where General Hatami is slated to deliver a speech on Iran’s positions and plans regarding regional security.
