Deepening strategic ties with neighbors, esp. Russia, Iran's key policy

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian President in a phone call with his Russian counterpart referred to good relations between Tehran and Moscow, stressing development of relations between the two countries in tall fields of mutual interest.

In the phone call, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed that developing relations with neighboring countries, especially Russia, is a key policy for the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying: "Surely, relations and cooperation between Iran and Russia will grow more than before in the 12th administration's term of office".

Underscoring economic and business relations between Iran and Russia, he said: "Tehran welcomes Russian investors and private sector's active presence and cooperation in significant infrastructural projects in Iran, including in industry and energy sectors".

On the complications in the region and situations in some countries such as Yemen, Iraq and Syria, Rouhani also emphasized that consultation and cooperation between Iran and Russia are important in resolving the issues, especially combating terrorism.

Pointing that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is a multilateral agreement and US actions violate their commitments, Rouhani said: "The Islamic Republic of Iran has always lived up to its commitments and the IAEA's report verifies this fact well".

"It is essential that Russia have a positive role in the JCPOA to contribute to the reinforcement of the agreement and all parties' living up to their commitments," President Rouhani added.

He also referred to situations in Yemen and said: "The Security Council of the United Nations must take effective measures in facilitating humanitarian aid to Yemen with no conditions attached".

For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated Rouhani on the beginning of the 12th Administration's term of office and wished success for the administration and people of Iran.

"Today, exceptional horizons in relations between Iran and Russia are ahead of us and we must attempt to deepen relations and cooperation between Tehran and Moscow," Putin added.

He also said that Russian investors and businesspeople are willing to take part and have more active role in infrastructural projects in Iran.

Mentioning that Iran and Russia must boost cooperation in resolving issues and problems in the region, especially in fighting terrorism and establishing stability in Syria, he said: "Fortunately, today we are witnessing good achievements in the field of stability in the region with the help of Iran and Russia".

"Based on report by the IAEA, Iran has lived up to all its commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the violation of this agreement by any party is in fact in contrast with Resolution 2231 of the Security Council of the United Nations," he continued.

President Putin added: "Iran and Russia can develop cooperation and consult more with each other to lay the necessary ground for facilitating humanitarian aid to the people of Yemen".
