Zarif meets executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime

Tehran (ISNA) –Executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)Yury Fedotov who visited Iran, met with Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday.

“West's failure in preventing drug trafficking is a major problem. On the other hand countering drug trafficking shouldn’t be politicized,” Zarif said, pointing to Iran’s readiness for cooperation with UNODC.

Referring to substantial costs that Iran bears for preventing drug trafficking, Zarif added: “our soldiers and youth lose their lives in this way and we bear substantial human and social costs which are not comparable with other countries so it is necessary that these countries shoulder much responsibility for the security and everyone pay costs equally”.

Yury Fedotov in his part applauded Iran’s prominent role in countering drug trafficking and said: “almost 75 percent of global drug seizure belongs to Iran and we are aware of the importance and difficulty of this issue. In this regard Iran has always been a pioneer and we should help it in fighting against these crimes”.
