Iran launches first home-made oceangoing research vessel

Tehran (ISNA) –Iran’s first home-made oceangoing research vessel dubbed “Persian Gulf explorer” was launched in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday with Iranian science minister in attendance.

 

With 900 tons weight, 50 meters long, 10 meters wide and 12 meters high, this explorer is capable of doing comprehensive research in the Persian Gulf, Sea of Oman and northern Indian Ocean for 45 days non-stop.

This research vessel is also capable of sailing 3000 nautical miles and can accelerate to 15 knots.

It can be used for sampling the seafloor and ocean sediment to the depth of 3000 nautical miles.

This explorer is equipped with 5 laboratories and a variety of supplies, equipment and advanced devices for sea and ocean studies and has cost more than $7 million to build.
