TEHRAN (ISNA) –Iranians took pride in their futsal team as it grabbed the bronze medal in the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2016.

Iran’s national team stood third after a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Portugal following a 2-2 draw in Cali on Saturday.  The first half had the feeling of a friendly, with both goalkeepers in Iran’s Alireza Samimi and Portugal’s Bebe being the standout performers in the opening period.

Both sides created a good opportunity to open the scoring. Ahmad Esmaeilpour had Iran’s best chance, but his chip over Bebe also sailed over the crossbar. At the other end, Samimi did well to deny Cardinal at close range.

Portugal also lost to Argentina 5-2 and failed to book a place in the final and faced Iran in the match for the third place.

The eighth edition of the Futsal World Cup kicked off on September 10 and wrapped up on October 1 with Argentina defeated Russia 5-4 in the final and took its first ever title.
