Over 60 aftershocks jolt southern Iran after strong earthquake

TEHRAN (ISNA)- Over 60 aftershocks with a magnitude of over 2.5 on the Richter scale have been registered in southwestern Iran after Tuesday's deadly earthquake which happened at 4:00 pm local time, said Head of Iran's Crisis Management Organization Mohammad Iranmanesh.

He further said that more than 20 aftershocks were above 4 on the Richter scale, adding the rescue teams from Bushehr's neighboring cities were dispatched to the quake-hit areas.

Iranmanesh said the strong earthquake claimed the lives of 37 people, and 850 other were sent to hospitals and clinics. He continued the basic requirements such as tents, blanket, drinking water and foodstuff have been sent to the quake-stricken areas.

Also the Managing Director of South Pars Economic Zone Pirouz Mousavi reiterated facilities of northern and southern Pars Gas Field have not been hit following the earthquake.

According to the Iranian Seismological Center, the powerful quake hit the town of Kaki, some 90 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital, Bushehr, at 4:22 p.m. local time (1152 GMT) on Tuesday at a depth of 12 kilometers.

The Persian Gulf Arab states of Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have also felt the shocks from the quake.

Bushehr nuclear plant has not been affected and is working normally.
