Iran expresses hope necessary steps to be taken to remove unilateral sanctions on Syria

Tehran (ISNA) - The UN secretary-general's special envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen has held a telephone conversation with Ali Asghar Khaji, a senior advisor to Iran’s foreign minister for special political affairs.

During the phone conversation, they discussed the latest developments in Syria, including the political process to resolve the crisis, the constitutional committee and the development of humanitarian aid for the country.

The two sides also underlined the need for continued support of the political process in Syria and the continuation of negotiations within the framework of the constitutional committee.

Ali Asghar Khaji expressed hope that, with the joint efforts of the UN and the international community, necessary steps will be taken to remove unilateral sanctions on Syria and to immediately reconstruct its vital infrastructure for the purpose of improving the humanitarian situation there and paving the way for the return of refugees and the displaced.

Pedersen, for his part, outlined his latest actions and efforts and underscored the need to increase humanitarian aid as a unifying element for resolving the Syria crisis.
