Iran respects will of Iraqi people in political decisions: Amir-Abdollahian

Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has described Iran and Iraq as two lasting friends and two brotherly nations in a meeting with Iraqi politician and the country’s former Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi.

Amir-Abdollahian said the potential for political, economic, cultural and popular relations between Iran and Iraq can be put into practice.

The Iranian foreign minister praised the actions of Abdul Mahdi and his government when he was the Iraqi prime minister to expand relations between the two countries.

Amir-Abdollahian stressed Iran's determination to develop relations with the Iraqi government.

Amir-Abdollahian added that Iran has always welcomed peace and stability in Iraq and its constructive role in regional relations.

He said the Islamic Republic respects the will of the Iraqi people in political decisions.

In the meeting, Adel Abdul Mahdi also pointed to the numerous commonalities between Iran and Iraq in various fields and described them as a great asset for the closeness of the governments and the nations of the two countries.
