Applications of radiant heating

Tehran (ISNA) - Natural events have always inspired mankind to create novel systems. Radiant heating systems are not an exception. The sun can be considered the inspiration for radiant heating systems since both warm up the environment via radiation.

The manufacture of radiant heating systems makes use of the principles of heat transfer, especially radiation. Given the modern nature of heat transfer science, radiant heating systems can be considered advanced systems.

Radiant heating is a mode of heat transfer in which heat is transferred from a warmer body to a colder one via radiation waves (infrared waves similar to solar waves). This method does not require heating air, and these waves convert into heat after they collide with the cold object, and warm up the cold object in this way.

Mr. Farhad Sokouti, the engineering director of AkhgarTebesh and a mechanical engineering graduate, has the following to say about the applications of radiative heat transfer:

“Knowledge of modern technology is of great importance to the design of industrial installations since it can minimize the loss of energy and capital. Radiant heating systems are a novel concept in Iran and unfamiliar to many designers. These systems have been in use for about 17 years.”

One application of these radiative heating systems is in large-space industrial heating. Previously, this task would be carried out via convective systems. In this method, the engine room would occupy part of the space. In a convective system, water is heated and transferred to heat exchangers to lose its heat to the air, which is then transferred to the space via ducts installed throughout the room.

Notice that industrial buildings have at least 4 meters height, and the warm air entering the room moves upward toward the ceiling due to its lower density compared to the colder air in the room and pushes this colder air down toward the floor. Hence, excessive energy is consumed to warm up these spaces. However, radiative heat transfer systems save a considerable amount of energy by eliminating the role of air as an intermediary and focusing heat onto the floor.

In addition, these systems do not cause any dust pollution in the room since they do not shift the air, unlike convective systems.

Another noteworthy point is that radiative heating systems heat up the space more rapidly compared to convective systems by eliminating the role of air. This leads to further savings in energy.

Lastly, selective heating of specific locations is a feature exclusive to radiative heating systems due to their capability to focus heat.
