Foreign Minister Zarif arrives in Damascus

Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif travelled to Syria on Wednesday morning at the head of a delegation for talks on bilateral and regional issues as well as the latest developments in the occupied territories and the Zionist regime's assaults on Islamic sanctities.

During the visit, the Iranian Foreign Minister will hold meetings with high-ranking Syrian government officials as well as Syria-based leaders of Palestinian groups in order to discuss the latest developments in the occupied Palestine.

“During the visit, I will meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad and some of Palestinian activists and groups,” Zarif announced upon his arrival in Damascus.

“I’m so glad to be in Syria and to meet with Syrian brothers and sisters. We have very special circumstances and we were supposed to visit Syria on the eve of the Syrian elections and talk to our Syrian friends about this important event,” he added.

“Unfortunately, the criminal actions of the Zionist regime have intensified since the International Day of Quds, and there have been unprecedented incidents in Al-Aqsa Mosque and the occupied territories. The bombing of Gaza has also created very serious conditions in the region, and Syria, as one of the leading countries in the resistance, has a very important role to play in this regard,” Zarif went on to say.

“So, in addition to the talks on the Syrian elections and the Islamic Republic's support for the Syrian government and people, our talks will focus on the fight against terrorism,” the top diplomat said.
