A total of 36 teams including 23 foreign teams and 13 Iranian teams participated in the highly regarded tournament.
President of Iran Wrestling Federation, RasoulKhadem, President of the World Federation of Pahlavaaniwrestling, AlirezaHeidari, some members of Technical Council of Greco-Roman wrestling and dozens of former Iranian wrestlers closely watched the tournament.
GholamrezaTakhti is arguably Iran’s most popular and best-known athlete. Takhti is still a hero to many Iranians across the world. He won Iran’s first-ever gold medal in Olympic but mysteriously died on January 7th 1968 when he was only 37.
Despite the fact that there are dozens of Iranian athletes that have won more international medals than Takhti, the wrestler’s chivalrous behavior and sportsmanship on the mat made him one of the Iran’s most popular athletes.
He won two World Championships gold medals in 1959 Tehran and 1961 Yokohama.
